Description
The Former Leazes Board School is a school building constructed in 1893, designed in the Jacobean style. It is built from snecked sandstone with a plinth, quoins, and ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring red ridge tiles. The structure is one storey high and consists of three groups of three bays, with the three central bays being lower and recessed.
At the center, there is a canted entrance porch that contains a partly-glazed double door framed by an architrave. Above this door is a panel and a pedimented shaped gable that projects above the eaves of the three-sided conical roof. The canted sides of the porch have small sash windows with glazing bars, and there are flat stone lintels above these windows.
The end sections of the building feature high, shaped gables above paired, keyed round-headed windows, with roundels located at the peaks of the gables. An impost string of windows runs around the corner pilasters, which are topped with high moulded coping and ball finials, although one finial is missing. The inner returns of the building have groups of three square-headed windows, with the central window being higher and breaking the eaves under scrolled pediments, while the outer bays are blank. All windows are fitted with glazing bars and have sloping stone sills.
The wings of the building have steeply-pitched hipped roofs that include conical-topped round metal ventilators. There is a long left return that follows a similar architectural style. At the rear, there are lower classroom and cloakroom blocks.
