Description
NZ 15 NE STANLEY SYKE LANE (North side) Burnopfield 2/196 Former Leazes 4/10/86 Board School GV II School. 1893. Snecked sandstone with plinth, quoins and ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof with red ridge tiles. Jacobean style. One storey, 3:3:3 bays, the 3 central bays lower and recessed. Canted central entrance porch containing partly-glazed double door in architrave, with panel and pedimented shaped gable above, projecting above eaves of 3-sided conical roof. Small sashes with glazing bars in canted sides and on either side have flat stone lintels. End sections have central high, shaped gables over paired, keyed round-headed windows, and roundels in gable peaks; impost string of windows continues round corner pilasters with high moulded coping; ball finials on pilasters and gables, one missing. Inner returns have groups of 3 square-headed windows, the central higher and breaking eaves under scrolled pediments; outer bays blank. All windows have glazing bars and sloping stone sills. Steeply-pitched hipped roofs over wings have conical-topped round metal ventilators. Long left return in similar style. Lower classroom and cloakroom blocks at rear.
