Description

This retaining wall, balustrade, piers, and steps form part of the southern terrace of Axwell Park, dating to the early 19th century. The retaining wall itself is constructed of graduated courses of rusticated sandstone, topped with a moulded ashlar coping. Six piers run along each side of the terrace, supported by retaining wall pilasters and connected by a low, curved stone coping. A similar arrangement of piers and balustrade fronts the central steps. The piers in front of the steps are surmounted by tall finials bearing the arms of Clavering (lions). The terrace wall piers are decorated with wide, classical urns, some of which are now missing.
