Description

Old Bridge End Cottage is a toll cottage that has been converted into a house. It was built in 1779, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries, originally for the Gateshead to Hexham Turnpike. The cottage is constructed of dressed sandstone, which is rendered and painted, featuring ashlar dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof with ashlar coped gables and a single gable stack, along with two additional stacks. The building is a single storey plus an attic.

The main east front displays a three-light sliding sash window with 20th-century exterior shutters on the ground floor, and a similar two-light sliding sash window above, also with shutters. To the right, there is an addition with a glazed panel door. An early 19th-century addition to the left features a south elevation with a three-light casement window, which also has 20th-century external shutters. A 20th-century addition to the left includes a north front with a large three-light casement window and a single light window to the left.

The interior is reputed to retain original beams and a spiral staircase.
