Description
The War Memorial in Swalwell, Whickham, was built in 1918 by W.H. Wood. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features inscribed panels made of Lakeland slate. The memorial is octagonal and designed in the Perpendicular style. It has a wide step leading up to a double-chamfered pedestal, which is inscribed with the words "UNVEILED BY THE RT. HON. EARL OF DURHAM K.C. LORD LIEUTENANT EASTER MONDAY 1918," and displays nine panels listing the names of those who died in the two World Wars. Above these panels, there is low-relief lettering, and the sloped coping is supported by moulded and coped buttresses that define ogee-headed panels containing blank shields beneath a string course. The tall tapered shaft is decorated with foliage and topped with a cross finial.
