Description

The Swineshead War Memorial was dedicated in 1920 and designed by Mr Bond of Grantham, with construction carried out by Maxeys of Sleaford. It is built from limestone, possibly Barnack stone, and incorporates slate plaques. The memorial takes the form of a cross with an octagonal base and shaft. Three steps lead to an octagonal plinth, which features crenellated detailing at the top. The plinth supports a slender, tapering shaft topped with a calvary. Shields are positioned at the top of each of the eight panels around the plinth; five of these panels have slate plaques, one bearing the inscription "IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF ALL THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1914-1918 WHO STAND IF FREEDOM FALL WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE". The remaining plaques list the names of those who died in both World Wars.
