Description
Blaydon West Infant School, formerly known as Axwell Park School, is a school building constructed between 1907 and 1909 by architect J. Morson. It is designed in the Arts and Crafts Baroque style and features snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, along with diagonal tiles that have a later felt covering.
The north front of the building is two storeys tall, with a high blank basement below. It has eight bays, with the two central bays being prominent, each topped with four linked, coped round gables above four large hall windows, which are flanked by smaller windows. The main windows are notable for their very tall triple keystones and cut voussoirs that rise to the copings. Bays two, three, six, and seven have three grouped windows each, with the central window being taller and similar to those in the central bays, all set in raised coped gables that break the eaves. Bays one and eight feature three small cloakroom windows. Ornamental rainwater heads are positioned between the windows of the central section and between bays one and two, as well as between bays seven and eight. Long tapered buttresses mark the divisions between the bays, finishing at the wall plane at floor level.
The south front is a single storey and has eaves that are interrupted by six gables, with the two central gables being higher and treated similarly to the others. It also includes small projecting canted-bay end windows, and the pupils' entrances are set back at the sides. The wall enclosing the area to the north has chamfered coping.
