Description
The Church of Holy Saviour is a parish church built between 1836 and 1837 by Benjamin Green. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, featuring an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has stone gable copings. The church is aligned north-south and has a nave with a ritual north porch and a south vestry, along with a lower, set-back sanctuary. It is designed in the Early English style, highlighted by a high pointed arch leading to a boarded door in the steeply-gabled porch. The east window is a three-light design, with lancets in the sanctuary and east nave, and two-light windows in the nave. A wide chamfered buttress divides the west lancets and supports a bell-cote above. The roof is low-pitched.
Inside, the church features plaster walls and sloping sills to the windows, with a queen-post roof that includes pendants. There is a blind high pointed west arch and high pointed moulded arches leading to the doors, as well as a moulded arch to the sanctuary, which is one step above the chancel. The chancel is paved with Caithness flags, serving as a memorial for the Second World War. It is noted that the church is aligned north-south to avoid a disused pit shaft located to the east.
