Description
Blaydon Old Bridge is a road bridge over Blaydon Burn, built in 1778 and altered in 1936. It was constructed for the Hexham Turnpike Trust using coursed and dressed stone with ashlar dressings. The bridge features a single round arch.
On the north front, the arch is made of rusticated voussoirs, flanked by single slightly projecting ashlar piers, with irregularly coursed walling beyond. Above this, there is an ashlar band at road level and a plain ashlar parapet with chamfered coping.
The south front has a similar design but is partly obscured by a large mid-20th century steel sewage pipe supported by rock-faced piers on either side. The eastern end of this front is also obscured by a pier from a large road bridge added in 1936.
