Description

Blaydon West Junior School, built between 1907 and 1909 by J. Morson, is designed in the Arts and Crafts Baroque style. The building is constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the roof is covered with diagonal tiles and later felt.

The north front features two irregular three-bay sections connected by a set-back central link, creating a symmetrical appearance. The central bay rises three storeys high, with an entrance in a projecting panel, a group of three low windows above, and a large tripartite window on the top floor. The inner bays are two storeys tall, each with three grouped windows per floor, the central window being wider and taller on the first floor, where it extends into a gable end. The outer bays consist of three storeys and a basement, with small cloakroom windows below. Above, there is a three-light round oriel, and shaped cornices adorn the central windows. Other windows feature lengthened keystones, with some being triple. The road front includes a one-storey entrance section that projects in front of a set-back rear wing, while a late 20th-century insertion is present in front of the central link.

The walls, piers, and railings consist of a retaining wall that supports stone piers with wrought iron railings between them, forming the boundary to the entrance terrace. Further north, the playground and its entrance are supported by a similar retaining wall with railings. All gate piers are square with flat coping and ball finials.
