Description
The Summerhouse, built around 1750 for Sir Thomas Clavering, is a Grade II listed structure located in Blaydon. This octagonal tower is constructed of Flemish bond brick with sandstone detailing, resting on a square rubble base topped with ashlar coping. The square base transitions to an octagonal shape with cyma moulding. There is a door on the north side beneath a flat stone lintel, while the tower features blocked window openings on all sides, each with sills and bracketed cornices set under round stone arches. Alternate bays have round-headed brick panels with sills and moulded impost blocks, and stilted round-headed arches above the openings. A cyma-moulded cornice runs around the top of the structure. Although a dome depicted in an old engraving is now missing, the interior includes a fireplace on the south-west panel. Historically, this Summerhouse was associated with Stella Hall, which has since been demolished. An inventory from 1755 describes furniture in the "Mount," which likely refers to this building. At the time of the survey, the Summerhouse was empty and disused.
