Description
The Church of St. Paul is a parish church built between 1827 and 1829 by Ignatius Bonomi. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a low-pitched roof made of Lakeland slate. The church is designed in the Perpendicular style and consists of a nave, chancel, and a west tower.
The tower is three stages high, with battlements, corner pinnacles, and tall angle buttresses. It has two-light belfry openings above a three-light pointed-arched window, with a slit window below. The south door is Tudor-arched and has a hoodmould. The four-bay nave is adorned with mullioned and transomed three-light windows, the easternmost of which includes tracery, all set under hoodmoulds. Stepped buttresses define the bays, while the short chancel features a priest's door, a five-light traceried east window, and diagonal buttresses. A corbelled and coped continuous parapet runs along the top. Wrought iron gates lead to the doors.
Inside, the church has plastered walls above wainscoting and slender nave arcades with four-centred arches. The ceiling is panelled and supported by cast iron brackets. There is a memorial panel dedicated to Charles John Clavering, who died in 1838 and served as High Sheriff, as well as a memorial screen and choir stalls for Sir Henry A. Clavering, who died in 1898.
