Description
Winlaton Forge is a forge built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a roof made of pantiles, with stone slates at the eaves and stone gable coping on curved kneelers at the front. The building is one storey high and has three bays. The central boarded door is flanked by windows that have external shutters, all of which are set under flat stone lintels with projecting stone sills. The low sloping walls at the front and rear create a shelter at the left return. There are two brick chimneys at each end. This forge is historically significant as it is the only surviving example of the many workshops in Winlaton that produced iron goods, an industry that began in 1691 with Ambrose Crowley.
