Description
This building, located at 59 Church Street, is a house that has been divided into two shops. It dates back to around 1600 and was extensively remodeled in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The exterior features red brick that encapsulates a timber frame and is topped with a slate roof. The structure has two storeys and a dentilled eaves cornice. The front has two windows: a three-light 20th-century casement on the left and a four-paned sash on the right, both with segmental heads. The late 19th-century shop fronts have bracketed hoods and half-glazed doors, which were originally fitted with rectangular overlights, located to the left and right. There is a passageway on the left side. The framing reveals two square panels that are exposed on the back wall above the passage.
Inside, the right-hand wall of No. 59 shows square panels and a long straight tension brace. There is a heavy cross beam with straight-cut stops, and the joists have ogee stops at the front, while further chamfered beams can be found at the rear. The external framing of the right gable end is visible through a small 19th-century casement window upstairs, featuring a collar and tie beam truss with vertical struts and short straight corner braces, similar to the left gable end of the adjacent No. 61 (Bell Inn). Part of the rear wall-plate is also preserved.
