Description
This building is a cottage located at 2 Lower Brook Street, dating from the early 17th century with extensions from the 18th and late 19th centuries. It has a timber frame with plaster infill set on a painted brick plinth, topped with a slate roof. The original layout features a two-cell baffle-entry plan, which was modified in the 18th century by adding a single bay to the left. There are also late 19th-century painted brick lean-to and gabled additions at the rear.
The cottage is one storey with an attic, showcasing framing with square and rectangular panels, two of which extend from the cill to the wall-plate and are supported by short straight tension braces. It features three-light cast-iron latticed casements flanking a ledged door that is set in a moulded surround. Above the door, there are prominent gabled eaves dormers, also fitted with latticed lights. The 18th-century brick extension includes two 20th-century fixed-light latticed windows on the ground floor. A notable late 19th-century red brick ridge stack with moulded capping is positioned above the door, and pointed finials adorn the dormers and the right gable end.
Inside, the timber frame is exposed throughout, including on the former back wall and left gable end. The interior features chamfered ceiling beams, a substantial chimney breast, and a late 17th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters. The roof structure consists of collar and tie beams.
