Description

Nos. 77-83 on Castle Street, which includes No. 1 Greenmarket, is a late 18th-century building that has been converted into three shops. The exterior features painted render over brick, with some brick exposed, V-jointed quoins, and broad pilasters. There are lead downpipes with rainwater heads, one of which is inscribed with "R & M E". The building has a 20th-century slate roof and a remnant of a rendered end chimney stack; notably, the roof level of No. 77 is slightly higher than the others.

The structure rises three storeys and comprises seven bays. The central entrance has a 20th-century glazed door and fanlight set within a bolection doorcase that includes imposts and a carved-leaf keystone. The ground floor features 20th-century shop windows, while pilasters separate the facade into single and double bays. Sash windows are present in segmental-headed painted stone surrounds, complete with false keystones. An inscribed panel above the central window states that "SIR WALTER SCOTT WAS MARRIED FROM THIS HOUSE DEC 24TH 1797".

The return gable wall connects to No. 1 Greenmarket. Although the interior of Nos. 79-83 was once of interest, it was gutted in 1989; Carlisle Museum documented the interior before the work began. Additional interior views can be found in Mary Slee's publication from 1915. Correspondence in the Cumbria County Record Office identifies which house is linked to Walter Scott.
