Description
The Market Cross, also known as Carlisle Cross, is a Grade I listed market cross located in Carlisle. It was dated and inscribed with "JOSEPH REED MAYOR 1682" and stands on the site of an earlier medieval market cross. The structure is made of calciferous sandstone ashlar, with some parts stuccoed and painted. It features a column sundial with five circular steps, although a sixth step is now buried. The base is square and sits on a chamfered plinth, topped by an unfluted Ionic column and a sundial head with ball and spear finials at the corners, top, and bottom. At the very top, there is a Lion sitting and holding a scroll that displays the city arms. Each face of the sundial has incised Roman numerals and painted metal gnomons. There is a mason's mark on the main sundial face, marked "ATM," which may refer to Thomas Machell, the architect, and Thomas Addison, the mason. Additionally, there is an Ordnance Survey bench mark on the top step. The Market Cross is centrally located in the Market Place, directly opposite the Town Hall.
