Description
No. 34 Fisher Street is a shop built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar, featuring a rusticated ground floor with broad Ionic pilasters above and a cornice. At the time of the survey, the building had no roof or chimneys. The entrance includes a right panelled door with a patterned overlight, set within a prostyle Greek Doric porch that has a triglyph frieze. The building has round-headed sash windows with stone surrounds and voussoirs; the left window has been converted to a doorway but has since been changed back to a window. Above, there are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals. The left return wall on St Mary's Gate, which was covered by an adjoining building until the creation of this new street in 1925, was refaced in 1989 with a composite stone to match the ground-floor facade. The interior was not accessible during the survey, but some internal panelled shutters remain on the upper floors. Historical records indicate that this building was the Carlisle and Cumberland Bank, which was formed in 1837, suggesting that this may be the year it was constructed. For further illustration, refer to the Journal of the North West Civic Trust, Spring 1985.
