Description
The railings and gates at the east end of Carlisle Cathedral were created in 1930 by John F. Matthew of Messrs Lorimer and Matthew from Edinburgh and were restored in 1989. These wrought-iron railings have a slightly curving design and form the eastern boundary of The Abbey. The gates, which were originally intended to be closed at night, are divided vertically into seven panels, with the off-centre gates making up two of these panels. The design features a low horizontal interwoven band and a frieze adorned with scrolls and various interwoven flowers. The panels on either side of the gates include vertical scrolled elements that rise up as piers. For detailed photographs and further information, refer to the artwork section.
