Description
No 1 The Abbey is a prebendal house, likely built in the late 17th century and 18th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th century and some demolition of rear extensions in the 20th century. The building features Flemish bond brickwork with light headers set on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of red sandstone, some of which are painted. It has angle brick pilasters and a graduated greenslate roof, with some sandstone flags at the rear and 19th-century brick chimney stacks.
The house is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with a rear right-angle left extension that creates an overall L-shape. Originally, it was two separate houses that have since been combined into one. The entrance features an off-centre panelled door with an overlight, all set within a bolection surround that has a pulvinated frieze. Above the door is a segmental-headed sash window, and to the right is a stair window, both with glazing bars. Further to the right, there are additional sash windows set in brick reveals with flat brick arches.
At both the extreme left and right ends of the building, there are full-height bay windows; the left bay is squared and made of red sandstone under a gable, while the right bay is canted and has a pent roof. The right return wall and rear of the house are partly constructed of red sandstone and are older than the facade. The left return and extension also include sash and canted bay windows. The interior has not been inspected.
