Description
No. 4 The Abbey is a prebendal house and offices built between 1859 and 1863, with additions made in 1896. The structure is made of coarsed red sandstone blocks set on a chamfered plinth, featuring flush quoins and a string course. It has graduated greenslate roofs with coped gables and kneelers, as well as red sandstone ridge and end chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with three-bay returns and a two-bay extension at the rear. The left bay projects and is gabled, featuring a ground floor three-light mullioned and transomed window and a similar two-light window above, both under hoodmoulds. The central entrance is a plank door in a pointed arch, with a two-light overlight under a hoodmould, and a two-light mullioned window above. To the right, there is a two-storey squared bay window under a gable, which includes three-light mullioned and transomed windows. The returns have some canted bay windows and other windows similar to those on the facade. Part of the rear of the building is now used as offices.
The interior includes cellars made of sandstone with brick vaulting, which are contemporary with the house and were previously misidentified as medieval. Historical records indicate that there was no building on this site in 1853, and construction orders were issued in 1859, with completion noted in 1863. Building plans for the rear extension can be found in the Cumbria County Record Office.
