Description

St Cuthbert's Vicarage is a building that dates back to 1832 and was designed by Christopher Hodgson. Originally two separate vicarages, it has been combined into one. The exterior features painted cement render over brick, with a sill band and a graduated greenslate roof. The roof includes gabled and boxed dormers, along with 19th-century ridge and end brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has five bays, originally consisting of two three-bay houses side by side. The left side has a 20th-century panelled door with a fanlight in a pilastered surround. Most of the windows are sash windows, with one paired window to the right of the entrance and a casement window to the left, which has a smaller casement above it, all set in plain reveals. The interior has not been inspected. A notable feature is the basement void to the right of the entrance, which is surrounded by speared railings. These vicarages were originally for Holy Trinity and Christ Church; when new vicarages were built closer to those churches in the late 19th century, they were combined to serve as the vicarage for the nearby Church of St Cuthbert. Plans for alterations made in 1896, when it was St Cuthbert's Vicarage, are held at the Cumbria County Records Office.
