Description

The Sportsman Inn is an inn that dates back to the early 18th century, with later alterations. It features painted rendered walls set on a chamfered plinth and has a local slate roof with an end rendered chimney stack. The building is low at two storeys and consists of four bays. The right side has a 20th-century door and flanking windows, all beneath an overall signboard supported by wooden pilasters. The windows are sash style, set in plain reveals with painted stone sills. A signboard and an inn sign are positioned between the windows. To the left, there is a 20th-century lean-to extension. The interior has been extensively altered. The inn is built on the site of the former Blackfriars Convent, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. For further historical details, refer to manuscript notes in Carlisle Library, and a 1900 illustration can be found in Perriam's work from 1988.
