Description
This is a section of the medieval city wall of Carlisle, dating from the 12th century with later modifications. The wall is made of sandstone, partially rendered, and underpinned by brick. It stretches for 70 meters in a linear plan.
The wall consists of two sections: a longer western part and a shorter eastern part, separated by a set-back. The western section, which once served as the rear wall of a narrow 19th-century stable range that has since been demolished, features rendered upper parts. The lower walls are made of thinly-coursed stonework typical of the 19th century, believed to be later underpinning. There are remnants of a chamfered plinth above, which has been cut back in places, and above this are three or four courses of large squared sandstone blocks identified as undisturbed medieval fabric. The wall includes various secondary openings such as a drain, sockets for floor timbers, and a larger hatch with a stone chute below. At the eastern end of this section, the later re-facing reaches up to the base of the rendered top section. Five short attached sections of cross walling that originally formed part of the 19th-century stable range and buttress the city wall are not of special interest and are excluded from the listing.
The eastern section of the wall, beyond the set-back, formed the rear of a former late-19th-century hotel that has also been demolished. Medieval masonry is believed to survive in the lower parts of this section, while the upper part, made of roughly coursed stone with many tooled blocks, is considered to date from the 19th century.
