Description
The gaol wall, located west of Crown Court in Carlisle, was built between 1824 and 1827 by Christopher Hodgson. It is constructed from high snecked red sandstone and features rounded coping, without a plinth. The wall runs from the Crown Court down Court Square Brow, along Borough Street, and up Bush Brow, enclosing the former gaol yard. Near the Crown Court, the wall retains its original height of nearly 10 metres and includes a blocked archway leading into the former stone yard. However, its height has been reduced along Borough Street and Bush Brow. The squared gate piers on Bush Brow were not built in the 1820s but are included for their group value. Original drawings by Christopher Hodgson for the gaol and this wall, dated 1824, can be found in Carlisle Library. For additional information on another section of this wall, refer to the Hospital Wing of County Gaol and Gaol Wall on English Street.
