Description
The Old City Gaol's south-east perimeter wall, located on Cumberland Road in Bristol, was built in 1832 by TS Pope. Constructed from carboniferous limestone ashlar and coursed pennant, this tall, curved wall features broad buttresses and an elliptical-arched carriage entrance at the eastern end, which has a key dated 1890. The battered northern wall extends westward from this entrance. Historically, the City Gaol had five wings centered around the entrance gate, and this wall is part of the remains of the eastern wing. The majority of the city gaol was demolished in 1898, with the surviving entrance gateway located 200 meters to the west.
