Description

The detached west wall of Citadel Station in Carlisle dates from 1879-80 and was originally part of an extension that connected to the main buildings via an overall roof. Constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar resting on a red sandstone base, the wall features broad pilasters with three recessed panels with pointed heads between each. It is linked to the main buildings by a series of arched tunnels, some of which are partially visible on the west side. A few of these arches have been converted into industrial units. The overall roof was removed between 1957 and 1958.
