Description
Caledonian Mill is a warehouse that was once converted to a mill and is now partly used as offices and a showroom. It dates from the 1840s and is constructed from coursed red sandstone on a chamfered plinth, featuring flush quoins and a stone-bracketed gutter. The building has a slate roof and retains vestiges of end stone chimney stacks, along with an external full-height chimney at the rear.
Due to its location on a slope, the building has five storeys at the rear and four storeys facing Backhouse Walk. The facade consists of 12 bays, with an off-centre loading bay that includes doors on each floor and a gabled hoist head above. There are doorways on the left and right sides of the ground floor, as well as regularly spaced casement windows, many of which are boarded over, all set within stone surrounds. The rear of the building is similar to the facade, although some windows have been replaced with 20th-century versions.
The interior has not been inspected. The building is depicted in Asquith's Survey from 1853. Plans for the addition of drying kilns from 1885 and 1886, when it was used as an oatmeal mill, are held at the Cumbria County Record Office.
