Description

A pair of mid-18th century houses, later altered and now used as shops, stand on the north-east side of Walmgate in York. The buildings are constructed of orange brick in a Flemish bond pattern, topped with a timber eaves cornice and a hipped pantile roof. There are end stacks to the roof. The front has three storeys and six windows. The ground floor contains modern shopfronts, with an upstairs access door at the left end. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are shorter, four-pane sashes, all set within painted stone sills and cambered brick arches. A moulded dentil and modillion eaves cornice runs along the top of the facade, returning at the right end, and incorporates two rainwater heads: one embossed with a cherub head and the other dated 1767. Raised bands of five brick courses define the first and second floors, with the first-floor band interrupted by the later shopfront. The interior was not inspected.
