Description

No. 5 Walmgate is a house, now part of a shop, dating from around 1830 with a later extension. It is constructed of orange-grey mottled brick in both Flemish and stretcher bonds, featuring painted stone dressings, timber boxed gutters, and doorcases. The roof is made of pantiles and is hipped towards Walmgate, with brick stacks.

The exterior is two stories high with a one-window front. The doorcase, which has pilasters and a cornice, originally held a door made of six raised and fielded panels with a blocked overlight. The windows on both floors are tripartite, consisting of 4:12:4-pane sashes, with channelled lintels and sills.

The left return facing Merchantgate has a two-story, three-window front, with a lower two-story, two-window wing to the left. The main front features a damaged doorcase with a six-panel door and a cross-glazed overlight, flanked by a blind wall on the right and a 16-pane sash window on the left. On the first floor, there is a 12-pane sash window situated between two 16-pane sashes. All windows have sills and wedge lintels, with some being channelled.

The wing includes a six-panel door positioned to the left of center, a 16-pane sash window to the right, and a two-light Yorkshire sash window further left. The first floor windows consist of two 2-pane Yorkshire sashes, one of which has been altered, and all have sills. The interior has not been inspected.
