Description

The Red Lion Public House, along with its attached outbuildings, is a historic building located on Walmgate in York. It dates back to the 15th century, with extensions added in the late 16th century and a 17th-century wing. Further rear extensions were made in the 18th century, while the inn front was remodeled in the mid-19th century, and 20th-century windows were added.

The building features timber framing that has been largely reconstructed, with plaster infilling. The inn front is finished in painted stucco, while the ground floor of the 17th-century wing is constructed of orange-brown brick in English garden-wall bond. The outbuildings and other sections are made of brick in various bonds, and the roofs are covered with pantiles and have brick stacks.

The exterior showcases a two-storey, two-bay front, with the left bay being lower. The first floor has reconstructed framing, and the inn front is adorned with squat pilasters on high pedestals beneath a plain cornice. There are panelled doors at each end, flanking one- and two-light windows with moulded mullions above a sill band. A single cross window is present on the first floor. The right return features a gable wall to the left of a two-storey wing with five unequal bays, where original timber framing is exposed on the first floor. The ground floor windows are squat one-pane sashes, while the first floor has two-light casements, with an original blocked window toward the right end. All windows are square lattice lights. The outbuildings, which are one and two storeys, have been significantly altered. The interior has not been inspected.
