Description

The Five Lions Public House and attached outbuildings is an inn and rear stable range located at 24 Walmgate in York. It dates from the late 18th century, with the stables raised in the 19th century, alterations and partial demolition occurring in the 20th century, and the inn being refronted around 1930.

The building features a front made of buff brick in Flemish bond and a rear of red brick in random bond, with the inn front finished in painted tile. The roof is covered in Roman tiles, with rebuilt brick stacks at each end. The stables are constructed of painted brick, orange and mottled brick in English random and garden-wall bonds, also topped with a Roman tile roof.

The exterior has a two-storey front with five windows. There is a wide carriage arch on the left leading to the inn, and a shopfront on the right, both of which are curved in plan. The inn front includes two three-light mullion and transom windows with heavy painted sills. The shopfront has a glazed door situated between plate glass windows. The first-floor windows are one-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat arches, and there is a moulded cornice beneath later boxed guttering. The rear of the building has two storeys, with the right end featuring a gabled attic. The shop has a 16-pane ground floor sash window, and the attic has a three-light mullion and transom window with a painted timber lintel, while the other windows are four-pane sashes.

The stable range consists of two storeys and six bays, with board stable doors beneath overlights. The windows have cambered heads, and one retains a slatted shutter. Loft openings have been blocked by iron sheeting. The interior has not been inspected.
