Description

Foss Bridge is a bridge built between 1811 and 1812, designed by Peter Atkinson, junior. It is constructed from ashlar gritstone and features a single span with an elliptical arch made of alternating long and short voussoirs, supported by rusticated pilaster piers. The bridge has a plain cornice topped with a parapet that consists of bulbous balusters and moulded coping, which is interrupted in the center by a sunk-panelled pier. The pilasters extend into the parapet as plain terminal piers. In 1975, gas lamps were added to the central piers, which are replacements from New Walk.
