Description
14 and 16 Clifton are a mirrored pair of houses built around 1800. They are constructed of brick with painted stone dressings and have a slate roof. The buildings rise three storeys plus attics and feature a wide pedimented gable facade with four bays, including a storey band below the first floor sill band.
No. 16 has sash windows without glazing bars, while No. 14 has sash windows with glazing bars and external louvred shutters on the ground and first floors. Each house includes a sashed attic window with a segmental head, and there is an oculus below the apex. The doorways are located at the outer sides of the facade and have doorcases with fluted pilasters, frieze blocks with paterae, and dentilled open pediments. Both doors consist of six raised and fielded panels; No. 16 features a plain semicircular overlight, whereas No. 14 has a fanlight. A chimney is located on the ridge.
The interior of the houses was not inspected, but records indicate that No. 14 retains a staircase with slender turned balusters and two original fireplaces, while No. 16 has a 19th-century staircase with cast-iron balusters.
