Description
Purey Cust Lodge, along with its attached walls and gateways, serves as the entrance and boundary walls to the garden of the Purey Cust Chambers. Built in 1845, it was adopted as garden walls around 1916. The lodge is constructed from orange-brown and orange-grey brick in various patterns, with magnesian limestone ashlar. It features a pent pantile roof with brick stacks. The walls are primarily made of coursed squared magnesian limestone, with some sections rendered and incised, and part of the interior is finished in orange brick in an English garden-wall bond. The copings are made of moulded stone or pantile.
The wall stands approximately 6 meters high, rising to about 8.5 meters at the rear of the lodge and tapering down to around 4.5 meters along Precentor's Court. It includes three gateways with double chamfered 4-centred arches and coved hoodmoulds. Two of these gateways are closed by nail-studded boarded gates, while the third, which provides access to the hospital, is open and flanked by shields of arms of St Peter and the Deanery of York. The lodge entrance features a nail-studded boarded door in a shouldered arch to the right of the hospital gateway.
To the right of the entrance, there are windows at two levels, featuring single or paired square-headed lights with diamond lattice glazing, all set in chamfered openings. The lodge has two low storeys; the ground floor windows vary, including 1- and 2-light small- and large-pane casements, one 2x6-pane Yorkshire sash, and one 2x2-pane Yorkshire sash. On the first floor, there are three 2x2-pane Yorkshire sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
