Description

20 and 22 High Petergate are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops and offices, dating from around 1840, with late 19th-century shopfronts that have been altered. They are constructed of pink-grey brick in Flemish bond, featuring timber shopfronts and doorcases, as well as timber guttering supported by paired block brackets. The roof is covered with pantiles and has brick stacks.

The exterior is three stories high with a four-window front. There are four doorways, two of which are part of the shopfront on the right. These doorways are framed by pilasters beneath a frieze and a minimal cornice on grooved brackets. The doorcase for No. 20 features fluted half-elliptical columns with imposts, while the adjacent doorcase has plain pilasters, both topped with flat cornice hoods. The doors consist of six flush panels with divided overlights, except for the shop door, which is glazed and panelled. The shop window is made of plate glass set over a brick riser. The remaining ground floor windows and those on the first floor are 16-pane sashes, while the second floor features unequal 12-pane sashes. All windows have narrow painted stone sills and slightly cambered brick arches, with the first-floor windows of No. 22 painted. The interior has not been inspected.
