Description
21 High Petergate is a building in York that dates back to the early 18th century. Originally a house, it has been subdivided and remodeled, now functioning as part cafe and part hotel. The structure features orange brick laid in Flemish bond, with the ground floor on the left rebuilt in English garden-wall bond. It has a pantile roof and three 2-light Yorkshire sash windows in dormers, along with a brick stack.
The exterior consists of a three-storey, five-bay front, with the center bay projecting forward on the second floor. The altered shopfront retains a full-width frieze decorated with swags and paterae, featuring paired doorways at the center framed by sunk-panel pilasters and a minimal cornice on scrolled consoles adorned with acanthus leaves. The left doorway has a renewed six-panel door and a radial fanlight set in a round-arched architrave, while further left are two inserted 12-pane sash windows. The shop on the right has a recessed door with six moulded panels and a three-light plate glass window.
On the first floor, there is an inserted bow window to the left, with eight- and twelve-pane sashes between sunk-panelled Corinthian pilasters, complete with an enriched frieze and moulded cornice. To the right, the windows are lengthened four-pane sashes with flat arches made of gauged brick. The second floor features two twelve-pane sashes to the left and three four-pane sashes to the right. A stepped brick band is present on the second floor, along with a wide plaster band and eaves cornice that includes a rainwater head inscribed with "MC 1763." The interior has not been inspected.
