Description

Nos. 17, 17A and 19 High Petergate is a building that originally served as shops and flats. It dates from the late 17th century and was refronted and remodelled in the mid-19th century. The front is made of orange brick laid in English garden-wall bond, featuring a timber doorcase and eaves guttering, while the rear is constructed of pink-grey brick in the same bond. The roof is covered with plain tiles, hipped at the front and gabled at the rear, with brick stacks.

The exterior has a three-storey front with one window. There are steps leading up to a deeply recessed door, which has six raised and fielded panels and a bordered overlight within the doorcase that includes angle blocks. To the right of the door is a sash window with a painted stone sill. The first and second floor windows are 16-pane sashes with slender glazing bars, all featuring channelled wedge lintels. A broad frieze band runs beneath the guttering, supported by paired brackets.

Inside, the ground floor has a re-arranged staircase leading to the attic, which features a moulded close string, bulbous balusters, square newels with attached half balusters and pendants, and a heavy moulded handrail. The shop in the front room includes a moulded cornice and spine beam, along with a massive brick fireplace with a timber lintel. On the first floor, the front room retains a moulded cornice and spine beam. The second floor's front room has a painted stone fireplace with a plain surround, while the back room features a small cast-iron grate in a painted stone fireplace.
