Description

The walls, lodge, and gates to Queen Elizabeth's Hospital were built between 1844 and 1847 by Thomas Foster and Son. Constructed from squared red rubble with limestone dressings, the structure features cross axial ashlar stacks and a pantile roof. It has a single-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range.

The lodge has an asymmetrical road elevation, with the right-hand section set forward. This section includes an arrow slit on the ground floor, a canted oriel window above with a moulded base and weathered top, and a central cross window featuring cast-iron lattice casements. An overhanging crenellated parapet crowns this section. The left-hand section has a first-floor nine-light window, with a label stepped up over a blind central window. The two sections are separated by a large ashlar chimney range that has four round stacks with crenellated tops.

The doorway on the right return is framed by an open timber porch with pierced tracery panels under a pitched roof. The ashlar gateway features a moulded Tudor-arched carriage arch, with a similar pedestrian archway to the left. This pedestrian archway has a label mould with king and queen head stops and foliate spandrels. Above it is a scroll inscribed "FOUNDED BY JOHN CARR MDCXXXVI." The structure is topped with a crenellated parapet that includes a central heraldic panel and a square crenellated turret to the right. The wrought-iron gates are notable for their two leaves, raised center, and pierced panels. The perimeter wall, which has narrow buttresses, extends approximately 80 meters to the north and 100 meters to the south.
