Description

West Lodge is a gate lodge built in 1846, designed by David Squirhill, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of brick with painted stucco facades and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing an Italianate style.

The lodge is a single-storey building with a single bay and extensions to the east and south. Originally square in plan, it has projecting bays. The exterior includes a moulded plinth and band, a rusticated band, and rusticated quoins at the corners. The entrance is located on the north side, featuring a solid projecting porch with a part-glazed door and a blind overlight, all framed by a tooled round-arch with a mask keystone and a continuous impost band, topped with a segmental pediment.

On the sides of the porch, there are round-arched 1/1 sash windows with moulded sills. Flanking the porch are narrow 1/1 sash windows with rusticated jambs and arches that also have keystones. The west facade includes a projecting solid bay with a central 1/1 sash window and overlight, featuring a tooled arch with a keystone and continuous impost band, with narrow 1/1 sashes on the returns. There are also 1/1 round-arched sashes on either side, all with moulded sills. The building is adorned with a C-scroll frieze and a modillion cornice that supports wide eaves. The hipped roof has two tall rear stacks with cornices.

At the rear, there is an extension with a bow window, consisting of three curved 6-pane windows with pilasters in between, topped with a frieze and egg-and-dart cornice, all resting on a base with horizontal rustication. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, the Gardens were established in 1836 as a covenanted space and were laid out and planted between 1846 and 1848, later being renamed after Dr. Henry Jephson, a well-regarded local medical practitioner. West Lodge forms an almost symmetrical pair with the North Lodge.
