Description
Willes Obelisk is an obelisk located in Jephson Gardens, Royal Leamington Spa, built in 1875. It is made of grey granite and stands on a stone base, featuring three steps leading up to a Neo-Gothic pedestal. The pedestal has pillars at the corners with foliate capitals and arched panels that carry shields. The obelisk is inscribed with the words, "Erected in honour of Edward Willes Esquire of Newbold Comyn to whom Leamington is indebted for the site of these gardens."
Historically, Edward Willes donated land for public gardens in 1836 as part of his Newbold Comyn development. The gardens were originally known as Newbold Gardens until they were renamed Jephson Gardens in 1846. The gardens are recognized in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.
