Description
West Lodge is a gate lodge built in 1846 by David Squirhill, located in Royal Leamington Spa. It is constructed of brick with painted stucco facades and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Italianate style.
The lodge is a single-storey, single-bay structure with projecting entrance and window bays on the south and west sides. It has a moulded plinth and band, with a rusticated band topped by rusticated quoins at the corners. The entrance is on the south side, set within a projecting porch that includes a part-glazed door with a blind fanlight. This door is framed by a moulded arch featuring a mask keystone and a continuous impost band, topped with a segmental pediment. On either side of the porch are round-arched 1/1 sash windows.
Flanking the entrance are narrow 1/1 sash windows with moulded sills and rusticated quoined jambs. The west facade features a projecting bay with a central 1/1 sash window that has a fanlight above, adorned with a tooled arch and continuous impost band, and narrow 1/1 sashes on the returns, all with moulded sills. On either side of this bay are round-arched 1/1 sashes with rusticated quoined jambs and moulded sills. The building is finished with a C-scroll frieze and a modillion cornice that supports wide eaves, a hipped roof, and a tall rear stack with a cornice. The north elevation includes a projecting apse.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the gardens surrounding the lodge were established in 1836 as a covenanted space and were laid out and planted between 1846 and 1848. Originally known as Newbold Gardens, they were renamed in honor of Dr. Henry Jephson, a well-respected local medical practitioner. West Lodge forms an almost symmetrical pair with the South Lodge.
