Description

The United Reformed Church, originally built as a Congregational Chapel, dates from 1836 to 1838. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick and features a Welsh slate roof along with a painted stucco front facade, showcasing a Neo-Classical style.

The church is a single tall storey with three bays and has a double-chamfered plinth. At the corners, giant Doric pilasters accentuate the angles. A flight of four steps leads up to a tetrastyle portico with a pediment, which is supported by a single column and engaged pilasters on either side. The portico includes a continuous frieze and cornice, with a parapet on the outer bays and behind the pediment.

The central entrance consists of triple fielded-panel doors topped by an overlight with glazing bars, all framed in a tooled architrave that features a cornice and low pediment. Flanking the entrance are tall round-arched windows with stained glass, set in moulded architraves and supported by sills with feet. The roof is hipped.

On each return, the first bay is stuccoed and projects, featuring a Doric pilaster at the angles. The entrance here is a plank door within a tooled architrave, topped with a cornice on corbels. The building has a tall plinth and six similar windows with pilaster strips between them, along with a frieze and wide eaves.

Inside, the church has a gallery on three sides, supported by cast-iron columns, with a second-floor gallery located on the rear wall.

Historically, Spencer Street was laid out between 1832 and 1839.
