Description
The Chair and Rocket Public House is a theatre, later converted into a public house, built in 1813. Subsequent alterations occurred in 1833, transforming it into a public house, with further modifications in the late 19th century. It was likely designed by Henry Hakewill for Mr J Simms. The building is constructed of brick with a painted stucco facade and a concealed roof.
The exterior is two storeys high, with five windows on the first floor. The ground floor projects approximately 2.5 metres. An entrance is set into a recessed, canted corner, with a stepped entrance featuring a part-glazed door and overlight. To the right is a further recessed entrance, now blocked with a step. The facade features a moulded plinth. The ground floor has three pairs of 6/9 casement windows in plain reveals with sills. A moulded cornice, frieze, modillion cornice, and low parapet complete the exterior. The first floor has four pairs of Tuscan pilasters at the ends of the range and flanking the central window. It has six-pane sashes throughout in plain reveals, a frieze, cornice, and a low, stepped parapet. A stack is located at the right end.
The interior of the room to the right includes a gallery approximately 0.75 metres high, featuring a moulded base, square-columned round-arched arcade, and a cherub-head frieze. Stone barrels labelled for beer and spirits are positioned at each opening.
Bath Street was a principal street of the 18th-century village of Leamington.
