Description
Waterloo House is a building located on Bath Street in Royal Leamington Spa, constructed between 1818 and 1836, with later additions and alterations, including a mid to late 20th-century shop front and attics. The structure is made of pinkish-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring a painted stucco front facade, a Welsh slate roof, ashlar copings, and cast-iron balconies.
The exterior consists of three storeys with an attic and a five-window range on the first floor. The first floor showcases 16-pane French windows with 4-pane overlights. The second floor has 8-pane casements with Gothick glazing at the heads. On the ground floor, there are side entrances, each with a six-fielded-panel door and an overlight; the right entrance has plain reveals, while both are framed by Tuscan pilasters that support a cambered arch. There are two steps leading to each entrance, with one roll-edged step to the left and both roll-edged to the right, the lower one being curved. A glazed entrance is situated between Tuscan pilasters. The building features a low parapet with copings, roof dormers, and end and roof stacks. The name 'WATERLOO HOUSE' is inscribed in raised letters between the first and second floors, and the first floor has a continuous balcony with a three-bar-and-panel motif.
Inside, at the rear right, there is a row of columns and pillars set into the rear wall, consisting of two Ionic columns and three pillars with decorative capitals. The first floor also features a large ceiling rose.
Historically, Bath Street was a main street in the 18th-century village of Leamington.
