Description
The Parthenon is a building that began as Royal Assembly Rooms and later became a Royal Music Hall, now occupied by shops. It was constructed around 1821 by Samuel Beazley, who was a London theatre architect and dramatist working for R Elliston, the manager of the Drury Lane Theatre. The facades were restored and repaired after fire damage in the 1960s. The rear of the building was rebuilt in the late 20th century and the ground floor now features modern shop fronts.
The building is constructed primarily of brick with painted stucco front facades; the facade on the left end (No.50) is unpainted. The roof is of Welsh slate, with a cast iron balcony in the centre range. The building is divided into a central range of four storeys with five first-floor windows between two symmetrical side ranges of three storeys each with one first-floor window. The central range is prominent and has quoins marking the corners. The first floor of the central range features French windows with six panes, each with a divided overlight and set within taller, tooled, round-arched architraves. The second floor has six-pane sash windows with sills, while the third floor has radial-headed six-pane sashes with sills. Between the second and third floors is an inscription panel which reads "PARTHENON" in raised lettering. A dentil frieze runs along the top, surmounted by a cornice. The side ranges have tall tripartite windows on the first floor, with a six-pane central window flanked by two-pane side-lights set in cambered reveals. The second floor of the side ranges has a tripartite window, with a six-pane centre and two-pane side-lights. All windows are set in plain reveals. A frieze and cornice are followed by a low parapet. The ground floor now has plate-glass shop fronts. A continuous balcony runs along the first floor; the central range has a round-arched arcade.
The interior of the building was not inspected as part of the listing process.
