Description

The Emperor's Cantonese Restaurant is a restaurant located in Royal Leamington Spa, originally built around 1825 as a cock-pit or gaming room. It has undergone later additions and alterations, including a range added to the front right and a conversion to a restaurant that took place around 1985 to 1990. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond and features a Welsh slate roof.

The structure is L-shaped and has two storeys. The front elevation includes three first-floor windows, while the rear right has a single tall storey. On the first floor, there are three casement windows, one of which has an elliptical arch. The ground floor features an entrance to the left with double glazed doors, a casement window, and two blind windows. The right range shows the remains of a tall, blind cambered recess with a band. The left side has a double hipped roof with a raised light-well above the former cock-pit or gaming room. The left return includes a plinth, a tall cambered-headed arched blind recess with an impost band, a further band, and two blind openings with flat arches made of rubbed brick.

Inside, the single tall storey has six slender cast-iron columns with palmettes on their capitals, and a gallery that runs along the east, south, and west sides. The staircase leading to the gallery features tapering rods and a wreathed handrail, with a similar balustrade surrounding the sides of the gallery. The building is included in the register for its historical interest.
