Description

This is a shop with living accommodation above, dating to circa 1813, and subject to later alterations. It is likely designed by Henry Hakewill. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco front and side facades, and has a Welsh slate roof. It is four storeys high and has three windows on the first floor. Full-height pilasters with fielded panels define the corners. The first floor has a partly concealed band. The central tripartite window features a 6/9 sash window with 5-pane side-lights, set within a surround of fielded pilasters, a frieze, and a pediment, with a sill detail featuring feet. Blind windows flank this central window. The second floor has a central blind opening between 6/6 sash windows. A stepped frieze and cornice run along the top of the façade. On the third floor, there is a blind window to the centre, flanked by 3/6 sash windows. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor has three plate-glass windows with pilaster strips incorporating fielded panels. Entrances are accessed via steps to glazed doors on the left return. The left return also features similar pilaster strips to the corners and a blind opening on the first floor between unequally-hung 5-pane sashes, followed by a 6/6 sash window on the second floor. A stepped frieze and cornice are present. The third floor has a blind opening to the centre between 3/6 sash windows, featuring a continuous sill band. The interior has not been inspected. The building was originally the Leamington Club, and from 1838 to 1857, it housed the Leamington and Warwickshire Bank. Bath Street was a key street in the 18th century village of Leamington.
