Description

The stables, dovecote, and adjoining cartshed and stables are located approximately 50 metres north of Thealby Grange Farmhouse. They date from the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century stable addition. The stable and dovecote range is built from ironstone rubble with brick dressings and features a brick upper stage for the dovecote. The cartshed has a brick front and is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble with brick dressings, all under pantile roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a 3-bay stable that incorporates a square dovecote, alongside a 7-bay cartshed and stable range that extends at right angles towards the farmhouse.

The stable and dovecote range includes a low two-storey section with two bays, while the third bay on the right is raised to form the full two-storey dovecote. It features quoins and three stable doors set in a segmental-arched opening, which are part-glazed with dove-holes below, all beneath a hipped roof with a finial and a 20th-century weather-vane. The cartshed is single-storey, with six round-headed arches supported on square piers; the four central openings have inserted plank doors and side panels. The range continues with later stables, which consist of two bays with two doors in brick surrounds. The remainder of this range, extending beyond the stable towards the house, is of no special interest.
