Description

The building is a former School Board Offices, designed by John Bilson of Hull and constructed in 1898. It was later used as a Careers Office.

The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has hipped slate roofs, with two panelled side wall and single rear wall stacks. It is designed in an Early 18th century style. The facade features a plinth, sill bands, string courses, dentillated eaves to the left and moulded eaves to the right. The building consists of a three-storey main block flanked by two-storey wings, all with basements. It has a 4:3:3 bay arrangement.

Most of the windows are glazing bar sashes. The main block’s central bay is recessed, with side bays featuring pediments containing scrolled cartouches. A three-light mullioned window with a cornice is positioned centrally, above which is a similar window with Doric piers and pilasters. Below this, a stone doorcase features heavily rusticated columns, a panelled frieze, and a broken scrolled pediment with a scroll keystone. A two-light casement sits within the tympanum. A left side bay features a two-storey recess containing 18-pane sashes with moulded surrounds, cornices and double keystones above, and two 12-pane sashes flanked by Doric pilasters. Below, two segment-headed 18-pane sashes have moulded surrounds and corniced keystones.

The right side bay incorporates a three-light window between the floors with panelled mullions and a moulded round head with a Gibbs surround. A dated cartouche with scroll decoration and a streamer inscribed "School Board" is set in the tympanum. Above the window, a paired 18-pane sash is flanked by Doric pilasters. Below, a two-light mullioned window with a cornice is situated.

The left wing has four 18-pane sashes on each floor; the upper windows have moulded surrounds and cornices with double keystones, whilst the lower ones have segmental heads and corniced keystones. The left return elevation, facing Albion Street, has a dentillated pediment featuring an elaborately decorated coat of arms in the tympanum. A Venetian window with a moulded head and Gibbs surround, flanked by heavily rusticated Doric piers carrying entablatures with keystones, is located on the first floor, with side lights. It is also flanked by paired Ionic pilasters. Below the Venetian window, two segment-headed 18-pane sashes have moulded surrounds and keystones, all set under a common cornice. The basement contains a door to the left and a glazing bar window to the right, both segment headed.

The right wing has three segment-headed 18-pane sashes on each floor, with keystones set in shallow recesses defined by pilaster strips to the upper windows. The lower windows have segmental cornices with corniced keystones. The basement contains low segment-headed openings.
