Description

This building is a former school, now a further education centre, dating to 1895. It was designed by AN Bromley of Nottingham for the Nottingham School Board as new premises for High Pavement School.

The building is constructed of red brick with a rock-faced stone basement, ashlar and terracotta dressings, and plain tile roofs, including a lead-covered octagonal turret and spire. Four tall, coped side wall stacks are present. It is built in a Renaissance Revival style.

The exterior features ashlar bands and a first-floor cornice, with a dentillated main cornice. The front bays are divided by buttresses topped with pinnacles. The windows are mainly glazing bar casements with ashlar cross frames and mullions. The building is two storeys plus a basement and attics, with a 2:7:2 bay layout. The main block is flanked by set-back side bays and is symmetrical to both the front and rear. The main block includes seven tall cross casements to the front. Above, there are three similar windows under coped gables with pediments alternating with four smaller cross casements. The returns of the building have similar fenestration. The side entrance bays, each featuring a single window, have ogee pyramidal roofs. A basement-level ashlar doorcase features a cornice, finials, and glazed double doors. Above the doorcase is a tall, three-light mullioned window with a paneled transom and pediment. Above this, a smaller three-light window, and above again, a two-light mullioned window to the attic. The gabled end bays have a three-light window with pilaster mullions, and above that, a canted oriel window of three lights. Another three-light window with pilaster mullions sits above the oriel. All windows are sashes. The rear elevation has a recessed centre with six windows, and two gables. Higher wings flank the rear elevation, each featuring three windows and pedimented through-eaves dormers. The rear windows have wooden frames and mainly segmental heads.

Inside, the ground-floor hall has a tile dado, moulded span beams on brackets, and round-arched double doors with voussoirs.
